Each daily bus route has a paid individual responsible for the day to day supervision of that route. This individual is a member of the teaching staff at the head school on that route, often being the principal.

Responsibilities include ensuring that

  • vehicles are not over loaded
  • families are aware of changes to routes
  • safety and behaviour standards are met
  • there is adequate liaison with the bus driver and Multi Serve
  • concerns and accidents are promptly reported

Each Ministry funded school bus service has a designated and paid Bus Controller whose responsibility is to complete a number of administrative, safety and liaison roles. However over and above the bus controller’s role, another option would be for schools to appoint senior students as bus monitors/wardens to provide feedback to the bus controllers/principals on behaviour or other school bus issues.

The NZ Police is responsible for enforcing legislation where appropriate and is able to provide transport and traffic safety training for students. Please contact your local Police Education officer who will be able to visit your school and help deliver this training to all students.

Student Transport Monitoring Framework

In order to enhance safety standards and management of student transport, a monitoring framework has been introduced. The framework provides a regular opportunity to review safety standards of vehicles and students, route issues, communication issues and any other general matters. Should you have any concerns in these areas, please do not hesitate to contact your regional transport co-ordinator. Please see the link in the right hand column.
